Plucked From the Public Air - Assessing the Essence of Radio
Radio is air as shared public sphere. How to define what is special about this medium?
Radio breathes the public air, it is both social space and medium of transmission.
From its inception it has been characterized by its densely heterogeneous programming and the audience has since been free to act with agency and take what they find interesting from the “Ether” created by radio. A main protagonist of this medium is the art of language, through the technology of radio it becomes audible in the most varied of forms.
The first day of the symposium will be fundamental research. We will question: Where is radio art in relation to media art? What imaginations relating to the recordings of sound and voice were there before storage and transmission became possible? How alive is the word as the building block of radio art? Who narrates in radio? Is it the language, sound itself, or the sequencing of sounds? Is it the authors, under the care of dramaturges? Or perhaps it is the participating audience that guides. Which rules do the stories adhere to? Is it those of the classical five acts, those of the action story? Or perhaps it is more akin to pop-music?

Listening to the Arts
The Acoustic as Material in Art
The interest of artistic disciplines in the acoustic seem to come in waves and in the past few years a new wave has come forth with strong inclinations towards the immaterial and atmospheric. Many artists now use the power of sounds, as a formal device to expand the radius of effect in their work.
The application of voice, language, speech, movement, sound, noise and music plays a decisive role in this.
On the second day of the symposium we want to inquire as to the aesthetic possibilities of the acoustic: How is its relationship with the visual manifested? How do visual artists use sound in their work and why? What paths do musicians walk as they sculpturally explore the acoustic? Is there a symbiosis of image and sound? How fleeting is sound itself seen from a historical-scientific perspective? Is a performative choreography perhaps “silent” music? We will listen in on visual artists, protagonists of new music, sound scientists, opera composers and choreographers in their relationship to and manipulation of the material “sound”.

Sounds In Public Spaces
Expansion of the field of listening
The shaping of public space through sound has long been overlooked, but recently this subject has been brought to the attention of artists, city planners, scientists and advertisers. The third day of this symposium questions affect, possibilities, and the potential value of sound design within our surroundings: What are these spaces and how are they acoustically shaped?
Should the sound of public space be designed at all? What happens to us, our condition and our memory when sound in everyday life is shaped? Is it even possible for there to exist a category of “beautiful sounds” that is common to everyone? Artists, sounddesigners and cultural scientists step in to this extended zone of listening and present their personal views in this matter
