Documenta 13 made apparent that visual art in recent years has increasingly invested itself in the power and affect of immaterial sound. Even though in Kassel you could experience countless works using voice, audio, breath and air-streams in space, Radio – a long-time essential generator of these artistic practices – was curiously underrepresented. Here we will ask the question: Why is this new acoustic dimension of experience deployed? And how do visual artists work with sound – this entirely non-visual medium?
